South Ari Atoll (locally Alif Dhaalu Atoll) sits in the central Maldives, a ring of reefs and sandbanks built around a string of inhabited local islands and resorts. It's one of 26 atolls that make up the country, and it's best known for one thing above all: whale sharks.

Whale sharks, year-round
The South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA), established in 2009, runs along a 14-kilometre reef shelf on the atoll's southern rim, from Maamigili in the west to Dhigurah in the east. Research published by the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme — which has photo-identified more than 500 individual sharks since 2006 — has documented what's believed to be the only confirmed year-round whale shark aggregation anywhere in the world. Most of the sharks seen here are juvenile males, so sightings aren't tied to a narrow migration window the way they are in many other whale shark destinations.

Manta rays
Manta rays are also a regular sight in South Ari, with sightings possible throughout the year at several cleaning stations around the atoll — some sites are more active earlier in the year, others later, so exact timing is best confirmed locally when you book.

Snorkeling and local island life
Because the whale shark and manta sites here sit close to the surface and close to shore, they're accessible to snorkelers, not just certified divers — one of the things that makes South Ari a practical base for a guesthouse stay rather than only a liveaboard destination. Beyond the marine life, the atoll's inhabited islands each have their own small-town rhythm: fishing, guesthouses, mosques, and tea shops rather than resort infrastructure.
