What the excursion involves

Swim alongside whale sharks in the reef of South Ari Atoll, just off shore. Snorkeling equipment is provided, and excursions typically depart at 09:00 after breakfast. Sightings can't be 100% guaranteed — they're wild creatures — but most trips do see them.

Why South Ari, specifically

Unlike most whale shark destinations worldwide, where sightings cluster around a specific migration window, South Ari Atoll's whale shark aggregation is documented as present year-round. Researchers with the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme have photo-identified more than 500 individual sharks in the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA) since 2006, and the population — mostly juvenile males — appears to stay resident rather than migrate through on a seasonal cycle.

So does timing matter at all?

Not in the way it does elsewhere. You don't need to plan a Maldives trip around a whale shark season the way you might for, say, Western Australia's Ningaloo Reef. That said, no single excursion can guarantee a sighting — conditions vary day to day the way they do with any wildlife encounter.

What can affect a single day's chances

Sea conditions, recent weather, and time of day all play a role in any individual excursion, the same as with any wildlife encounter. Morning trips are generally preferred by local operators for calmer water.
